Finca La Quimera is a sustainable project focused on organic and regenerative agriculture located in the heart of rural Costa Rica, surrounded by coffee plantations, sugar cane fields, and secondary and primary forests.
This secluded farm was founded in 2019, born from a deep love for nature and living in it in a more respectful and sustainable way, with the desire to be the home, school and oasis for those who want to take the step to a much more low-impact, healthy and self-sufficient lifestyle.
The farm is a natural paradise of 8.5 hectares of recovering forest, counts with it's own natural water springs and it is surrounded by the beautiful river Jicotea, which has some small pools to bathe in, a perfect place for birdwatching and enjoying a wide variety of flora and fauna.
It is located about 1.5 km from the small village of Jicotea, about 25 km from the city of Turrialba in the province of Cartago.
My name is Alba Aguirre, I'm originally from Spain, but I moved to this hidden paradise in the mountains of Turrialba to start the farm I've always dreamed of.
I currently live here with my little girl, my cat, and my dogs.
For many years I worked for a big company and lived near a big city in Spain until 2003 when I started to get involved in the culture of Costa Rica. A few years ago I started to build this project, guided by my love for nature, to live in a more sustainable way.
In 2020 I started the volunteer program to share this experience and lifestyle. This has been very enriching and a great way to let others take home ideas for change.
For this reason, I became interested in incorporating permaculture principles and values into our actions, and after completing a permaculture certificate course here in Costa Rica, I started planning and designing the farm spaces that we are currently developing.
Welcome to La Quimera!
Alba. 🙏🧡🌱
Our mission is to create a sustainable human ecosystem in the forest that does not disrupt natural processes while promoting a healthy and balanced life in a community based on permaculture principles.
The purpose of this project is to produce our food and shelter in a coherent and healthy way, while generating enough abundance to meet the physical and social needs of a small community, and to share this process so that it can be reproduced.
Therefore, we are investigating natural and regenerative agricultural techniques and bio-construction methods to improve our growing and living spaces.
We are currently improving the vegetable gardens, preparing the beds for a new planting season. We are taking care of our banana, plantain, and coffee plantations, planning and developing an agroforestry system by reforesting with some native wood and fruit species, improving the kitchen and common area, finishing details on the volunteer cabin, improving trails, and working on the systems that will connect and feed these elements.
At the farm, we are organically growing different types of crops, fruit trees, and vegetables that our volunteers will be involved in tending, harvesting, cooking, and enjoying in their dishes. More and more of the food we eat at the farm comes from our own organic harvests.
At La Quimera Farm we have no electricity, so you will also be able to experience what it means to live off the grid, letting your days begin guided by the light of dawn, allowing these natural cycles to bring balance to your body and soul, a rhythm of living in total harmony with nature.
Discover the natural heart of Turrialba and the Chirripó area, home to some of the Cabécar indigenous people, and the Pacuare River Valley, a river known worldwide as the craddle of rafting.
